The Blogger's Prayer

Lord help me to learn to spell without spellcheck, manage to visit all that visit me, and post regularly - all in 5 minutes a day, so that I can clean house and take care of my family. Help me to not look at every occurrence in my life as a blog post, and to quit taking pictures of weird things to share as well. Please Lord, help me to stop talking about my blog friends as though they are next door neighbors or someone I have known all of my life. And help me dear Lord, to think of something witty and wise to post tomorrow.

Wednesday Hero

This Weeks Post Was Suggested By Michael

Cpl. Lloyd Oliver
Cpl. Lloyd Oliver
88 years old from Glendale, Arizona
April 23, 1923 - March 16, 2011
U.S. Marines

"Am I a hero? I don't know.  Yeah. I'll be a hero.  I'll go for that. Yeah."

Wednesday Hero profiled the Code Talkers way back in 2005.  But this week it is honoring Cpl. Lloyd Oliver.  Cpl. Oliver was one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers.  He joined the Marines in 1942 at the age of 19 because he wanted to serve his country.  Which he did, proudly, for three years.  In 2001 he received the Congressional Gold Medal for being one of the original 29 Navajo Code Talkers.  He passed away on March 16 of pancreatitis.  Cpl. Oliver was only one of two remaining original Navajo Code Talkers.

Not only have we lost a great man, a brave man, but a piece of history is another step closer to being gone forever.  We must keep them, and their place in it, alive for future generations.

You can read more about Cpl. Lloyd Oliver here and here.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday.  For that, I am proud to call them Hero.
We Should Not Only Mourn These Men And Women Who Died, We Should Also Thank God That Such People Lived

This post is part of the Wednesday Hero Blogroll.  For more information about Wednesday Hero, or if you would like to post it on your site, you can go here.

  1. It makes me so sad when I read these obituaries of great, brave men. Not only have we lost a hero but as you so beautifully said another piece of history is gone.

I so honor these brave men and women who served. My prayers go out to Cpl. Lloyd Oliver and his family and I thank him in my prayers for his bravery.

  3. Mountain Woman, yes it is sad when we lose a peice of living history.

Sandee, they only way that code could have been broken was to get their hands on one of the talkers since their language was not written down.
