ABOUT THE HAMMERED DULCIMER

The hammered dulcimer is an ancient trapezoidal musical instrument played by striking the strings with wooden hammers.

Originating in the Middle East about 2000 years ago, English soldiers brought the instrument back to England after their failed attempt to conquer Persia during the Crusades about 1000 years ago. Dulcimers have many names in many lands: santur in the Middle East, yang q'in in China, hackbrett in Austria, zither in Germany, and cymbalom in Hungary. The name "dulcimer" is derived from Latin, meaning "sweet sound". Hammered dulcimers were popular in England during the reign of James I, when the Bible was translated into English as the King James Bible. The dulcimer was mentioned in the Book of Daniel 3:5 among other instruments "..the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of music..." The dulcimer was later mechanized to become what we now know as the harpsichord which later evolved in the piano.

THE SERENITY PRAYER

THE SERENITY PRAYER
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen. - Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

The Blogger's Prayer

Lord help me to learn to spell without spellcheck, manage to visit all that visit me, and post regularly - all in 5 minutes a day, so that I can clean house and take care of my family. Help me to not look at every occurrence in my life as a blog post, and to quit taking pictures of weird things to share as well. Please Lord, help me to stop talking about my blog friends as though they are next door neighbors or someone I have known all of my life. And help me dear Lord, to think of something witty and wise to post tomorrow.

IF YOU WANT TO SHARE ANY POSTINGS

ANYONE IS WELCOME TO TAKE THE STUFF POSTED HERE TO SHARE ON YOUR SITE. ALL I ASK IS A TIP OF THE HAT AND A LINK BACK. UNLESS I SAY HANDS OFF THIS POSTING!!!

National Ice Cream Month

July 17, 2011 was National Ice Cream Day!! (From Punchbowl.com) I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! What better day to shout this mantra than today—it’s National Ice Cream Day!

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month. He also declared that the third Sunday in July would be National Ice Cream Day. We’re definitely thankful, because ice cream is a summertime (or anytime!) favorite for people of all ages. With hundreds of flavors and toppings to choose from, you can't go wrong with ice cream!

Whether you get it in a cup or in a cone, atop a waffle or in a banana split, make sure to visit your local ice cream shop today to get some cold, delicious ice cream. Watch out for ice cream events and freebies happening in your area! Happy National Ice Cream Day!
Sorry, I'm too late for most of them, but some are offering specials for the whole month because the whole month of JULY is NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH!!

I thought that I would highlight some uniquely and wonderfully Los Angeles artisan ice cream and gelato heavens.  I know gelato isn't an ice cream, but it seemed to fit here and I'm dying for some now.  I will also let the videos and pictures speak for themselves, but they are all absolutely fabulous and artisian!!!

Unique flavors that dance in your mouth!!

Carmela's handmade ice creams and sorbets are made in small batches from fresh, real ingredients such as herbs & spices, flowers, and seasonal fruits. We use farmers market produce and organic dairy. We believe seasonal tastes better, so check in often to see what’s fresh.

Carmela Mortarotti was the grandmother of co-founder, Jessica Mortarotti. The daughter of a baker, Carmela taught Jessica the joys of working in the kitchen at a very young age. The name translates to garden.

Although their flavors are untraditional, they dance in your mouth as the quality, vibrant taste and new combinations sing in harmony!!

Bulgarini Gelato (taken from thier website and is a review from LA Weekly)
"Avenue to the Sky," it was once called, a broad, swift thoroughfare rising from the Pasadena business district up to the steep San Gabriel Mountains. Henry Ford himself used to test the engines of his cars against Lake Avenue's steep upper grade. And as near the top as any business in Altadena, tucked in behind an auto parts store, is Bulgarini Gelato, the most improbable ice cream store in California, almost a gelato speakeasy, where the gelati are labeled only in Italian and the best flavors include Florentine chocolate speckled with sea salt and a goat-milk gelato with roasted cacao nibs that could double as a cheese course. The proprietor, soccer-mad Roman expat Leo Bulgarini, has been known to pull his delicious sorbetti from the menus of restaurants that fail to come up to his standards. But the gelateria is a singular, perfect blossom: gelato powerfully flavored with the pistachios he hand-carries back from Bronte, vibrant peach sorbetto, yogurt gelato scented with Tuscan olive oil, and dark, smoky chocolate gelati flavored with orange peel, with fresh hazelnuts or with rum. In the summer, he screens movies on the patio outside his shop, because as everyone knows, nothing goes better with a showing of La Dolce Vita than a dish of Santa Rosa plum sorbet.

I don't know how they do it, but they make the fruit or whatever flavor taste more like the original.  There melon sorbets taste more like melon than melon does.  Their hazelnut gelato tastes more like hazelnuts than hazelnuts.  My friend who introduced me to them told me this and I was really not understanding what he was saying.  My first taste and I really, really understood.

So, What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
