The Way Up Is Down
-Matthew 23:12

It may seem backwards, but Jesus tells us the way for us to be exalted is to humble ourselves, or in other words, the way up is down. This principle is restated in 1 Peter 5:6: Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

Caregiver of Pearl Harbor survivor pleads not guilty

By Kristina Davis and Steve Schmidt

Originally published January 27, 2011 at 3:51 p.m., updated January 27, 2011 at 4:40 p.m.

At 93 years old, Arnold “Max” Bauer is as proud a Pearl Harbor survivor as they come, always willing to recount the day the Japanese poured bombs on his Navy ship, always eager to tell how he managed to stay aboard the repair vessel USS Vestal amid the chaos.

In recent years, though, the hero had fallen on tough times. His wife died in 2007. The once-thriving garden outside his house near El Cajon went to seed. Friends and neighbors said they tried to reach out, but the front gate into his driveway was usually locked.

Then came Tuesday’s news: Sheriff’s deputies arrested his live-in caregiver for allegedly mistreating him. Authorities discovered that the esteemed veteran was living in a state of squalor, his house thick with trash, rotting food and rat droppings.

Deputies found him gripping a photo of the USS Vestal, where he and his crewmates made their stand on the morning of Dec. 7.

Milagros Angeles, 62, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to four felony charges: elder abuse, theft by a caretaker, false imprisonment of an elder and possession of altered checks.

She faces up to six years and eight months in prison if convicted on all counts.

El Cajon Superior Court Judge Charles W. Ervin granted the prosecutor’s request to raise the bail to $1 million, saying Angeles was a flight risk. She was arraigned via video from Las Colinas Jail and said nothing during the hearing.

The arraignment came as a portrait emerged of Bauer’s life during the past few years. Neighbors and fellow Pearl Harbor survivors said Thursday that they had grown concerned about the veteran, but had a tough time contacting him.

Stuart Hedley, president of the San Diego Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, said he visited Bauer at his Euclid Avenue house near Granite Hills High School a few days ago, after several failed attempts to reach him.

Hedley said Bauer was unshaven and sounded confused, saying at one point that he didn’t know where his late wife, Roma, had gone. “He kept telling me, ‘Time is passing me by,’ ” Hedley recalled.

Next-door neighbors Mary and Nick Asaro said they worried about Bauer after his wife died, but he once told them that he was fine and could take care of himself.

They noticed that his garden went untended and that he and Angeles seemed to spend the bulk of their time behind closed doors.

A preliminary hearing for Angeles has been set for Feb. 9.

The alleged abuse came to light when Bauer’s bank noticed that he hadn’t come in since October. The bank made several phone calls to the home and spoke with Angeles, who told them Bauer either wasn’t available or was in Hawaii, said sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Varnau.

The bank became concerned and reported suspicion of elder abuse to Adult Protective Services.

When sheriff's deputies checked out the house a few days later, they found about $9,000 in cash hidden in the home. Some of the cash was in bundles in Angeles’ bedroom, while the rest was found stuffed into a money belt and the pockets of the five layers of clothing Angeles was wearing at the time.

They also found at least 56 checks written to herself for a total of about $5,600, as well as $1,800 in checks written to others. There is also evidence that she was funneling money to a bank in the Philippines.

“He would sign anything she put in front of him,” said Varnau, who described Bauer’s memory as “childlike.”

Deputy District Attorney Danielle Hickman said Bauer suffers from dementia. When he was hospitalized this week, doctors discovered an severe urinary tract infection and prostate cancer that had never been diagnosed and was not being treated.

Angeles, a legal U.S. resident from the Philippines, has lived in San Diego County for the past six years and has no criminal record. She had been working for Bauer since 2009.

U.S. Marines

Cpl. Jason A. Karella died supporting combat operations in the Farah province of Afghanistan when the Humvee he was riding in rolled over.  He had given up his, as his Father described "best seat in the armored Humvee" to the turret gunner who wasn't feeling well that day.

"My son was proud of what he stood for," said his father, Kevin.  "He had a fiancee named Beth and he said to me, 'Dad, I don't have to worry about Beth getting blown up in a market over there because we're keeping them busy here.'"

Karella grew up in a strong military family, with his father a former chief warrant officer in the Army, and his brother Josh also having served in Iraq.

Marines recognized Karella for his incredible strength, which he used to carry large amounts of ammunition with him in the battlefield. They referred to him as "the walking ammo supply point" and "the walking arsenal." Well-respected among his peers, he was awaiting a promotion to Sergeant at the time of his death.

This page has a nice background piece on Cpl. Karell.

Clueless asks, "Do We Ban Perfume?"

Allergic teen's mom wants to ban perfume in school from Mom's Today. The following is an article and some of the numerous responses:

First peanuts, now Axe body spray?

The mother of an allergic teen in Indiana is suing her son's school district to try to force his high school to ban perfume and body sprays, which she says can trigger a life-threatening allergic reaction in her son.

Many elementary school districts have banned peanut butter from the lunchrooms in order to protect children with severe peanut allergies.

It's unclear whether the 17-year-old Indiana boy is truly allergic to perfumes, or if they simply irritate his asthma. Regardless, Janice Zandi's lawsuit has the potential to broaden the responsibility of school districts to respond to students' allergies.

According to court documents, ABCNews.com reported, the school's principal told the mother in the case that all she could do was ask students to limit their in-school use of perfume and cologne sprays, and allegedly said that the boy "just has bad genes."

What do you think? With all the different allergies out there today, how should schools respond? Is a ban the answer? (comments from this post on

Today posted responses:

I have HAD ENOUGH of the one voice being heard over the voices of the many! Freaking enough already people! Grow the eff up and take responsibility for yours and your own.

Instead of wanting to require other students not to wear deodorant or colognes, this try home-schooling then there will be no worries.Should we require all co-workers at our jobs to refrain from deodorants or perfumes too? What about when in a theatre or mall?or in a plane or train too? Lets not get carried away.

This mom should home school her son. Many children with environmental health issues are home schooled. What if her son encounters perfume in the work place? What if he encounters perfume at the mall? He needs to learn to live and adapt to his disability and not expect the world to stop because of him. Others can learn to be considerate but he will have to learn to adapt.

If your child can't hack it in a normal environment, you should make other arrangements, not sue the school (which is most likely underfunded anyway) for denying your request for special treatment. When will America wake up and realize we are not entitled to a darn thing?

Here in PDX, the arts organizations ask patrons to refrain from wearing scent(s) to concerts. This is simply common courtesy. I see no reason a school can't or shouldn't ask students (and teachers and administrators) to refrain from wearing scent(s) as a common courtesy. Of course a person has a right to wear scent(s); that doesn't make it right.

Forgive me for sayin so, but doesn't the kid have a 'me me me' attitude when he (his mom) is trying to demand that no one wear perfume? Do people need to bathe in perfume? of course not. But for the mom to expect that EVERYONE submit to the requests of her son is ridiculous and very much a 'me me me' attitude.

then keep him home I'm so sick of all these whiners whining of this and that if you don't like it don't try it if its annoying stay away from it im allergic to stupid people you don't see them banning them anywhere do you?

You can't ban something just because of one person's reaction. Have him wear a face mask in school. What's next, banning underarm deodorant!!

All you judgemental people on here need to do some studying on asthma and asthma triggers. Some people are not "born" with asthma. It is not something that starts as a young child either. Ask yourself this, is perfume really necessary? Is it vital to a persons existence? I should hope all you judgemental people say NO!! My Mom developed asthma in her mid 30's. Many allergens such as perfume, flowers, floral scents, candles, smoke, detergents etc. etc. will set her off into an INSTANT asthma attack. She rarely leaves her house. She does not go to church anymore. She will only go to her local grocery store where most of the employees there know she is highly allergic to perfume. It is sad, that there have been numerous times she has wound up in the hospital and the nurses taking care of her come into her room BATHED in perfume. We post signs on her room to let these nurses know not to come into her room if they are wearing perfume.

I agree with the Americans with disabilities act to an extent, but NOT to the extent that the majority of the population becomes disabled in their everyday life goings on because of 1 person or whatever. Society can only bend over backwards so much before they fall. Where is this persons responsibility?

Good lord, where does it end. I couldn't agree with the above poster anymore. What happens when this kid gets into the real world. As far as the principle saying bad genes, he/she is right. Modern medicine is weakening our society. People like him should have died already so that he could not breed and perpetuate his jacked up retarded, one armed and one half crippled leg of a genetic structure.

Oh, please! Perfume and cologne are not a matter of hygiene in high schools, they're a matter of social preference. In fact, I guarantee that if high school kids (especially the boys) were banned from using those products then the general level of hygiene in the school would increase dramatically, since they wouldn't be able to load on the smell-sprays to mask their stench. I remember high school all too well to believe that kids would somehow suffer and die if they couldn't use the stuff. Now, this kid could suffer and die if they keep using it.

There are millions of people in this country with "LIFE-THREATENING" reactions. BUT, it is their responsibly to know what those are and to protect themselves!!
I found this post quite interesting as I am allergic to strong odors and anything scented. Despite two letters from my physician.  My supervisor who hates conflict seemed to put the blame on me.  We were in a cubicle environment and after being asked to tone it down a bit.  Three coworkers decided to wear even more.

While my supervisor was on vacation, Human Resources set me up in a closet space with every thing that I needed.  It was a relief as I would become anxious every time I had to go to work.  However, when my supervisor returned she said, that counselors, work in cubes only and that I would need to move back. HR stated that there was nothing else that could be done.

I was even verbally assaulted by one of these individuals and followed into another building.  My supervisors response was that I shouldn't make a big deal out of having to move to another work area or having others volunteer to help me move.  She did allow me to move my entire work station or go and work at a satellite office.

I would not only have stomach problems due to the situation, but I would get migraines, uncontrollable sneezing, itchy, sinus headaches and infections, etc... Unfortunately, I am even more sensitive that before which by physician states that it is due to my prolonged exposure at work.

I had our union try to intervene, but eventually was told that I would actually need to sue the agency which no attorney would take as it didn't involve enough money.  The general feeling from my supervisor seemed to be that I was making a big deal out of nothing.  The "blame" and "responsibility" were put on me.  Medically I was doing what I was told to do.  I do have a heavy duty carbon filter mask that works, but I would look like a hazmat team.  It also wasn't a good solution as I could not do my work which required a significant amount of talking and telephone conversations.  With the mask on, no one could understand me.

Yes, I do make accommodations outside of work which also prevent me from being fully active in the community.  I often have to leave places such as church, a play, theater, concerts, stores, resturants, etc... My husband now does the dishes and any cleaning that requires a cleanser that is beyond a natural form.  I'm worried about the next place I need to go to or my next job.

But, it is so difficult.  By the way, those who wear scented especially perfumes usually eventually develop allergies. Many of these products are have very toxic ingredients such as arsenic.  I am seeing more and more places that are fragrance free.  I've seen a couple of doctors offices that says that they won't be seen as the doctor is allergic.  Natural does not mean fragrance free either.

What do you think? With all the different allergies out there today, how should schools and work places respond? Is a ban the answer?

Aww Monday.

This weeks AWW Monday is from an email I received from my friend Jackie (Shinade from the Deleted Blog The Painted Veil):

THE PASTOR'S CAT

This particular story just made me laugh. Every time I think about it, the vision of that poor cat just amuses me to no end. Hope the story leaves a bright spot in your day. Whoever said the Creator doesn't have a sense of humor?

Dwight Nelson recently told a true story about the pastor of his church. He had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc.

The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and pulled it until the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.

That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke.

The tree went 'boing!' and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible and walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No! Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, 'Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping,' and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members.
He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, 'Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?'

She replied, 'You won't believe this,' and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, 'Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it.' She told the pastor, 'I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her.'

Never underestimate the Power of God and His unique sense of humor. Anyone can count the seeds in an apple; but only God can count the apples in a seed.

well I didn't know that

Today I found out the actor who played “Scotty” on Star Trek, James Doohan, was shot six times storming Juno beach on D-Day.

Doohan, a Canadian, after leading his men through a mine field on Juno beach and personally taking out two German snipers in the process, eventually took four rounds in one of his legs; one in his hand, which ultimately resulted in him losing his middle finger; and one in the chest.  The shot to the chest likely would have been fatal except that he had a silver cigarette case there, given to him by his brother, which deflected the bullet.  He would later give up smoking, but at least he could say that being a smoker actually saved his life.

Ironically, the shots he took were not fired by the enemy, but rather by an overzealous Canadian gunman.  After his unit was secured in their position for the night, Doohan was crossing between command posts, when a Canadian gunman spotted him and opened fire.

Doohan originally joined the Canadian Forces at the age of 19, eventually being commissioned a Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Artillery.  D-Day was the first and last action he saw in the war.  After recovering from his injuries, he became a pilot in the Canadian Air Force, but never saw action.  Despite not ever flying in combat, he was once called “the craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Force” when he flew a plane through two telegraph poles after “slaloming” down a mountainside, just to prove it could be done.  This act was not looked upon highly by his superiors, but earned him a reputation among the pilots of the Canadian Air Force.

Bonus Factoids:

    * As mentioned, contrary to what many people think, Doohan was not Scottish.  He was Canadian.  When he was auditioning for the role of the ship’s engineer, he went over various accents for Gene Roddenberry for the character.  After he finished, Roddenberry asked him which he liked best and he responded: “Well, if you want an engineer, he better be a Scotsman because, in my experience, all the world’s best engineers have been Scottish.”
    * Although he wasn’t Scottish, Doohan described the character of Scotty as: “99% James Doohan and 1% accent.”  “It was a natural. When I opened my mouth, there was Scotty.  Scotty is the closest to Jimmy Doohan that I’ve ever done.”
    * The name Montgomery Scott was chosen because Montgomery was Doohan’s middle name and the character was portrayed as Scottish.
    * Both the Klingon language and the Vulcan language were initially very crudely developed by Doohan.  Later, these languages were expanded and refined by professional linguists, primarily by Marc Okrand.
    * While great pains were taken in Star Trek to conceal the fact the Doohan was missing a middle finger, there are several episodes where this can be observed.  These include: Cat’s Paw; Day of the Dove; and The Lights of Zetar.  This can also be observed in a scene in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and In Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.  In the former, it can be observed when he hands McCoy parts for the Transwarp Drive and in the latter when he’s holding a plastic bag dinner which was given to him by Lt. Uhura.
    * Doohan not only played the character Scotty in Star Trek, but also did the voice for many different parts including: The M-5 from The Ultimate Computer and Sargon from Return to Tomorrow, among many others.
    * Before landing the role as Scotty, Doohan did over 4000 radio shows and 400 TV shows in Canada and was particularly noted for his great versatility in voice acting.
    * Shortly before his death, Doohan was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, lung fibrosis, Alzheimer’s, and, eventually, pneumonia.  His official cause of death was listed as pneumonia and Alzheimer’s.
    * Doohan was married three times in his life and fathered four children.  He met his final wife, Wende Braunberger, when she was just 17 and he was 54, marrying her very shortly after their first meeting.  The two had three children, the last in 2000, and remained married for 31 years until Doohan’s death in 2005 at the age of 85.

HorsePucky!

for 58 years I have been AQUARIUS. Now I'm a Capacorn WTF??????

CLEVELAND - Next time someone asks “What’s your sign?” you may want to check the calendar before you answer. Instead of being a stubborn Taurus, you may actually be a Gemini.
According to astronomer Parke Kunkle, the Earth’s alignment has changed and that has altered the zodiac calendar.
"Because of this change of tilt, the Earth is really over here in effect and Sun is in a different constellation than it was 3,000 years ago,” Kunkle told NBC .
Kunkle told NBC that the Earth’s movement on its axis has added a 13th sign. Ophiuchus, which is Greek for “serpent barer,” is a rarely-used zodiac sign. So some Pisces are now Aries and some Libras are now Virgos.
The new dates:
Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 - May 13
Taurus: May 13 - June 21
Gemini: June 21 - July 20
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20

Rest in Peace Dick Winters.

I saw this over on Trav's site and had to post it here as well.

Richard D Winters, former Major in the US Army and commander of Easy Company, who's story was told in the HBO mini series Band of Brothers, has died.  He was 92.

As a young Lieutenant, Winters joined the 101st Airborne and went through training as executive officer of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment.  He assumed command of 1st Platoon when Easy's original commander was transferred to run a parachute school in England just prior to the D Day invasion in June 1944.

During the jump into France, Easy's new commander was lost and presumed killed when his plane was hit by enemy anti aircraft fire and exploded.  Lt Winters was the senior officer present for duty and so became acting CO.  On D Day, Lt Winters led a text book assault on a German heavy gun battery near Brecourt Manor, knocking out several 105mm howitzer cannon and killing or dispersing at least 50 enemy troops, with his small squad of 13.  That action earned him the Distinguished Service Cross, captain's bars, and definitive command of Easy Company.  The assault is still taught as a sand table exercises of a perfect infantry attack on an entrenched enemy position.

Captain Winters guided Easy Company through Normandy, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge.  In January 1945, after the Battalion was relieved from the defense of Bastogne, Captain Winters was promoted to Major and and became acting 2nd Battalion commander.  He led the Battalion in capturing Berchtesgaden.  Major Winters and Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division were at Berchtesgaden when the order came to hold in place, and major fighting in World War II came to an end.

Major Winters ended the war as a highly decorated Battalion commander.  He was awarded a Distinguished Service Cross, 2 Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, and Presidential Unit citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, all for valor in combat.  In addition, he was eligible to wear the "I was there" ribbons offered for service in the European Theater of Operations.

Major (retired) Winters worked extensively with the author Stephen Ambrose to tell the story of Easy Company in Ambrose's book, Band of Brothers:  Easy Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest.  From that book came the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.  There have been several other books written about Major Winters.  He was also an active speaker and lecturer.

What I remember most about listening to Major Winters and reading about him is how he never put much emphasis on himself.  To me, he defined the adage of an ordinary man who performed extraordinary things.  He put the safety and welfare of the men who served under him first and foremost, and would never ask them to do anything he wouldn't do himself.

Major Winters promised himself that when the war ended, he "would find a nice peaceful town and spend the rest of my life in peace."

Richard Winters was the big brother hero in a company of heroes.  I am most humbly grateful for his service, and wish him peace in his final rest.

a special tuesday thought

Desk Jockeyed

Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School in Little Rock , did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. Looking around, confused, they asked, "Ms. Cothren, where're our desks?"

She replied, "You can't have a desk until you tell me what you have done to earn the right to sit at a desk."

They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades.

" No," she said.

"Maybe it's our behavior."

She told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon, television news crews had started gathering in Ms. Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the desk less classroom, Martha Cothren said, "Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom.  Now I am going to tell you."

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) U.S. Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk . The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall. By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place, those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.

Hackers, a scary thought.

I have given this a lot of thought of how hackers are a sorry lot. They usually steal from other electronics via someones home wireless setup or even using someone elses satellite connection. The reason I said the satellite connection was what someone had mentioned that they were having usage when they were not even on line. I have had to change my wireless routers password a couple of time because someone was trying to piggy back my DSL connection because I use both a wired connection and a wireless one to connect both my main computer (the wired one) and my secondary one located in a different part of the house connected to my DSL via the wireless NETGEAR router. My router is positioned in such a way I can see which connection is in use more. I caught someone trying to use my wireless connection while I was playing one of my games which is down loaded into my computer and does not need to be connected to the internet to function, but yet the wireless symbol was flashing away as if the other computer was online. It was not even turned on. That's right if the computers are not is use they are shut off.

coffeypot: My Thoughts Exactly

coffeypot: My Thoughts Exactly

Silly Saturday

THE TOILET SEAT

Charlie’s wife, Lucy, had been after him for several weeks to paint the seat on their toilet. Finally, he got around to doing it while Lucy was out. After finishing, he left to take care of another matter before she returned.

She came in and undressed to take a shower. Before getting in the shower, she sat on the toilet. As she tried to stand up, she realized that the not-quite-dry epoxy paint had glued her to the toilet seat.

About that time, Charlie got home and realized her predicament. They both pushed and pulled without any success whatsoever. Finally, in desperation, Charlie undid the toilet seat bolts. Lucy wrapped a sheet around herself and Charlie drove her to the hospital emergency room.

The ER Doctor got her into a position where he could study how to free her (Try to get a mental picture of this.). Lucy tried to lighten the embarrassment of it all by saying, “Well, Doctor, I’ll bet you’ve never seen anything like this before.”

The Doctor replied, “Actually, I’ve seen lots of them. I just never saw one mounted and framed.”

the perfect Husband

Several men are in the locker room of a golf club.

A cell phone on a bench rings and the man engages the hands free speaker function and begins to talk.

Everyone else in the room stops to listen.

MAN: 'Hello'

WOMAN: 'Honey, it's me.  Are you at the club?'

MAN: 'Yes'

WOMAN: 'I am at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat.  It's only $1,000.  Is it OK if I buy it?'

MAN: 'Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.'

WOMAN: 'I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2010 Models.  I saw one I really liked.'

MAN: 'How much?'

WOMAN: '$90,000'

MAN: 'OK, but for that price I want it with all the options.'

WOMAN: 'Great!  Oh, and one more thing...the house I wanted last year is back on the market.  They're asking $950,000.'

MAN: 'Well, then go ahead and give them an offer of $900,000.  They will probably take it.  If not, we can go the extra 50 thousand if it's really a pretty good price.'

WOMAN: 'OK.  I'll see you later!  I love you so much!'

MAN: 'Bye!  I love you, too.'

The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths agape.

He turns and asks: 'Anyone know who this phone belongs to?'

Jordan Brown
Jordan Brown

An 11-year-old from Lebanon County in Pennsylvania, Jordan Brown has long been fascinated by World War II and one old soldier in particular -- Dick Winters, the Easy Company commander made famous by the HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers."

Mr. Winters, a Lancaster native who lives in Hershey, is 92 and has Parkinson's disease.

But a statue of him is going up in France, and Jordan has taken it upon himself to raise money for it by selling $1 rubber wristbands in the tradition of Lance Armstrong's yellow "Live Strong" bracelets.
